Dr. Matthew Wendt, Superintendent of Schools, has named Jason Edwards as Principal, Root Elementary School, for the 2017-2018 school year. Pending Fayetteville Board of Education approval later this month, Edwards will begin his new role on July 1, 2017.

“In his tenure with Fayetteville Public Schools, Jason Edwards has been an asset to Vandergriff, Holcomb, and Leverett Elementary Schools,” said Dr. Wendt. “He knows the district. He has integrity, ambition, and an incredible relationship with the teachers, support staff, students and their families in the schools where he serves.  I am thrilled to see him assume this leadership role at Root Elementary School.”

Mr. Edwards, who has worked for Fayetteville Public School since 2005, currently serves as assistant principal at Vandergriff Elementary School, a position he has held since July 2014. Previously, he served as a physical education teacher at Vandergriff, a first grade teacher at Holcomb Elementary, and as a special education behavior management classroom teacher at Leverett Elementary.

“It is an honor to be selected to lead Root Elementary School. I am excited to start working with great teachers and support staff as a team to advance student success. The Root community and the traditions that are in place are outstanding.  The sky is the limit for our Root Rockets,” said Edwards. “Parent involvement, passion from the teachers, commitment from classified employees, and support from the community make Root a special place. The children at Root are a great representation of Fayetteville, and I look forward to meeting each student and their families.”

Mr. Edwards earned a bachelor’s of science in education and a master’s of science of Educational Leadership from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Over time, Mr. Edwards is looking forward to working with FPS to begin his doctorate studies at the University of Arkansas.

“We are creating the best team of educational leaders in the state of Arkansas. The promotion of Jason Edwards demonstrates a commitment on our part to invest in current leaders within our own organization,” said Dr. Wendt.  “We are raising expectations, yet finding quality individuals within FPS.  After a three-part comprehensive process, one of our own was clearly the #1 choice. I am so excited for our school district and community to be leading efforts to create a brilliant, caring, and dedicated team of school leaders. Once again, it’s another great day in Fayetteville!”

Although Mr. Edwards will officially begin his duties at Root Elementary School on July 1, he will lead the efforts to fill several open teacher vacancies due to announced retirements.  In addition, Mr. Edwards will work with FPS and his new staff to recruit, interview, and hire a new assistant principal. Synetra Morris, current Root Elementary Assistant Principal, will be granted a transfer to serve in a new leadership role beginning next school year.  Current Root Elementary Principal Kristen Scott was hired as the new school district’s Director of Federal Programs.
